The Awareness of Posture
One of the side benefits of learning how to dance is the awareness of posture.
Posture is something that is important in one’s life for multiple reasons. The simple act of being aware of your posture starts a new relationship with your body. Would you think of posture unless someone had mentioned it, or addressed it in some manner? For many people the answer is no.
When you begin dancing one of the very first things that one should learn is a proper position over the foot. Where our weight sits over the foot will determine the quality of movement that is being created. In order to produce a good movement, having the weight on the forward part of the foot is best. Even though we may change our position over the foot, one thing that should not change is the posture. Making sure the body is lined up is key.
Because many of us have occupations that are sedentary, desk jobs and working with computers, we are sitting with our shoulders up, necks forward, in a slouched position. Dancing can counteract this, helping you develop the awareness and the core strength to correct this position.
It is never too late to improve your posture. The benefits of a straight back will show confidence and boost self esteem.
